Project suitcase is a toolkit of housing components, assembled by the homeowner. It is a finished housing unit that can be reassembled by home owner in a new location.

By building micro-units of housing, Project Suitcase aimed to address the immediate challenges of shelter for the homeless urban population in Southern India. The micro-units experimented with materials to address local climatic conditions and designs addressed the needs of separate spaces for sleeping, cooking, and storage.

Process

I designed an assembly manual to replicate the suitcase house design in any neighborhood. This helped my team members to execute the 10 prototypes with minimal supervision, this helped house 10 homeless families.

NIVASA NGO won numerous city and private grants to sponsor suitcase houses for multiple communities across Bangalore. The house design focussed on cost-effective construction materials to provide dignified housing to the homeless.
